I propose designing a project around the needs and desired goals of your group. Possible ideas: pendants, tiles to take home, tiles for a public art mosaic installation, painting with frit to create imagery, tiles to be used for personal mobiles, fundraising or public art suspension, jewelry-making and wireworking incorporated with the glass.
I bring all of the supplies to your location; the frit is glued down for easy transport to my kilns; I assist in installation, if necessary.
This is an ideal project for schools, home schoolers, children's parties and camps. I am very interested in exploring creativity with your group.
This past spring, in my son’s class of 10 to 12 year old children, I conducted a glass-making class. Initially, I brought in precut clear tiles of varying sizes and a selection of colored frit glass. Frit glass is various gradients of powders to tiny pebbles of glass. It is a child-friendly medium. Each child designed their tile by carefully layering colored frit on clear glass. I brought the tiles back to my studio for a kiln firing.
For this particular project, the object was to design mobiles with the glass tiles. The children designed, engineered and created mobiles by wiring the glass pieces together resulting in beautiful unique pieces of art. The mobiles were then auctioned at a fundraising event for the school.
Miss Cheryl, the art teacher, expressed amazement that there were children, who typically weren’t interested in art class, were enthusiastic about creating glass, particularly some of the boys.
